Easy Internet connection sharing is only a small part of UserGate’s potential. New in the latest release of the product is Panda Antivirus engine built-in, a bandwidth management tool for administrators that allows the slowing down of Internet connections for large-scale traffic users or configuring daily or monthly quotas of bandwidth usage.

VPN Server and VPN Client: UserGate includes an SSL VPN Server and clients that allow for both client-server and server-server connectivity. In client-server mode, users connect via the provided Windows-based UserGate VPN clients.

Anti-virus protection: Panda and Kaspersky (both optional) Antivirus engines fully integrated into UserGate. UserGate provides complete gateway traffic control that now includes double antivirus protection. Both the Panda and Kaspersky antivirus engines can be fully integrated into UserGate Proxy so they work together as a double layer intercepting all the data transferred through the various Internet protocols. Inbound and outbound E-mail (SMTP, POP3), Web (HTTP), and file transfer (FTP) traffic is examined.

Internet content filtering: provides for the ability to control user access to Web sites individually or in groups based on the Web Filter database. The database contains a list of denied sites and when users try to access a site that has been disallowed in a category they do not have access to, UserGate denies access to the page. Moreover, the network administrator can create individual rules to restrict user access to specific web resources generally or by user.

Managing different profiles for individual internal machines is made easier by giving UserGate the capability to support named groups of parameters. An administrator can group together IP filters and timing schedules, for use in specific configuration instances. The administrator can manage the activities of a single user or group of users with the help of flexible sets of rules, including:

• Internet content filtering to restrict user access to resources not related to work.
• Restrictions on operating times, amount of incoming/outgoing traffic per day and/or month or the amount of time spent online per day and/or month.
• Individual restrictions for connection speeds and traffic volumes.
• Lists of forbidden or allowed domain names, IP addresses, parts of URLs, etc.
• Range of IP addresses allowed to be accessed.
• Hourly Schedules of user Internet access.

Active Directory support lets the administrator use stored user profiles to be sure that all changes are automatically saved in UserGate. Also, instead of having to manually enter each user, UserGate can import users from an Active Directory, which makes it extremely easy to set up user connections.

Upstream Proxy Connection: UserGate provides support for upstream proxy connections with an authorization option.

With Internet caching accelerating and DNS forwarding UserGate provides a complete software solution. Windows-based UserGate works with DSL, cable, ISDN, satellite, dial-up or wireless Internet connections. Version 4.2 includes various improvements and bug fixes.

A clear interface simplifies the creation of network traffic rules, so setting up the firewall and connecting to the Internet takes just minutes.

A built-in SSL-based VPN server works in both client-to-server and server-to-server modes.

UserGate proxy is focused on network security, so UserGate firewall provides the additional protection of an Internet gateway to prevent hackers and other intrusions by blocking traffic going through particular ports. UserGate works at the TDI/NDIS layers of the OS, with thorough packet inspection applied to both incoming and outgoing network traffic. Rules are created and managed via an included rules wizard, so that packet filters, NAT, port mapping and access control can all be structured. All traffic policies can be defined and applied to users or groups.
